READING THE SIGNS

Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak and listen effectively.

• It includes interpreting printed material and electronic-based texts as well as oral and visual resources
• It can be as simple as filling in a very basic form correctly; reading the label on a medicine bottle; sending an SMS; or interpreting a job advertisement

Numeracy is the ability to interpret, calculate and communicate mathematical information.

• It can include planning a simple budget; calculating measurements; using a calculator; or checking a timetable

People with literacy deficits:

• May have had inadequate or interrupted education experiences
• Do not have English as a first language
• If a CALD client, may not have learned to read/write in own language
• May have a specific learning disability
